Task 1 - Generating ideas

Learning outcome 1 (U21): Be able to generate ideas for an original media product based on a client brief (P1, M1)

Ideas (P1)

I have been given a brief in which i have to plan and deliver a pitch for a media product. The London magazine is asking me to pitch my ideas for a new online and print based music magazine for North London.

First thing i am going to be talking about is understanding and finding out the demographics and also talk about the conventions of a music magazine.

Demographics -
Understanding the demographics of a certain magazine means being able to break down the target audience. The target audience of the music magazine that is going to be based in North London will be targeted to different types of people depending on the genre of the magazine. The magazine that is being created to meet the brief is going to be targeted to mainly young people that are most likely to be seen in the vibrant music scene that is developing locally. Younger people are more likely to be scene in these vibrant scenes rather than an older audience, because they are young and active and enjoy going out into loud environments.

The age group will range from around 16-25 year olds. The gender of these people will also be mixed because both males and females enjoy music that is happening in the live vibrant music scenes. Students are in the category E demographic group. The E group are casual/lower grade workers. The majority of people within this age group are going to be students which therefore means that they spend a lot of their money on going out and socialising within vibrant scene in London. For the students that enjoy music are very likely to spend some of their money on tickets for certain music events and concerts that will  take place. Students also use a lot of social media and tell their friends what they are doing which means that more students may also want to go these events and spend their money on the same thing.

Conventions -
Conventions are the things that are put on a magazine to help attract and bring in the target audience. There are so many different conventions on a music magazine that help add up to create the best product possible. Everything on the front and inside of the magazine are different conventions that create the magazine. For example on a front cover of a magazine there is a masthead, main image and cover lines. All of these conventions would be created in a way that would suit the genre of the magazine and would bring in the audience when the magazine is being sold. A masthead is the main title at the top of the magazine which will make the readers become familiar with what magazine they are reading. The main image of a front cover is usually the person that is associated with the main article/feature inside the magazine. A coverline is the lines usually on the sides of the magazine that are linked to the articles inside the magazine. There are so many different conventions of a magazine front cover such as barcodes, date, price, pug, strap line and even the fonts chose on the front cover.

The colour scheme of a magazine is one of the most important things because depending on who the audience is the colours can vary. E.G if the target audience was female the colour scheme could be more female associated colours such as pinks, purples and whites, where as if the target audience for more of a gothic group of people the colours may change to blacks, greens and reds. The colour scheme that is chosen can also symbolise what the genre is. If the magazine genre was a jazz magazine the colour scheme may be red, black and gold. The colour red connotes passion, love and fire which can all link to jazz music. There are also lots of conventions that need to go inside the magazine to make the magazine as good and professional as possible. Most magazines will include a contents page, double page spread which usually contains an interview or feature article based on the person that is on the main image on the front cover. The article/interview on the double page spread will give information about the person.

Another key convention is to have page numbers on every single page of the magazine. This is just to show the readers what page of the magazine they are reading and also an indication of how to find something that they may want to read from the contents page. The colour scheme inside the magazine will usually match the colour scheme of the front cover to make it look realistic and as if it is all the same magazine. Images throughout the magazine are also used just to relate to articles and make the magazine more colourful and interesting to read.

For any magazine to become popular and known they need advertisement. Usually the first edition of a new magazine will be published and then be given free. This is too bring readers in so that they don't have to pay for the first edition of a new magazine. It will get the name of the magazine around and make people talk about it. If the first edition is popular and people enjoyed reading it, the magazine will then become popular and people will start buying it regularly and maybe subscribe to it weekly.

My 3 Ideas -
I have come up with three different ideas for my music magazine.

My First idea for a music magazine is a Gig guide. I thought of this idea because there are so many people around North London that are not sure where to go on a Saturday night and there may be people that want to get out and do something different and go to something more vibrant rather than staying in. A gig guide would give people a chance to decide where, when and who they want to see and go to. There are hundreds of gigs and concerts that would be written about. There would also be information about each concert including any support acts that are going to be featured.

This is an example of a Gig guide which is what would be inside the magazine of my second idea for a music magazine in North London. I would lat out my gig guide something like this so that readers would know and be able to easily read the dates of certain gigs and where they are going to take place. It will help people to have an ideas of where they want to go and what music they want to go and listen too.

This is one of my font ideas for my Gig guide. I felt that they are the perfect colours and back ground because it is bright and vibrant and sets the scene of a gig/ concert. The font also fits well because of the shapes inside of the letters which are guitars and other instruments. It is an eye catching font and background and is enjoyable and fun to look at.

This is another spider diagram that again shows all of the positive things about creating a Gig Guide.

My Second idea is a 'Music NL' magazine. This is a magazine that includes music about all different types of genres such as pop, R&B, hip-hip, country and many more. This magazine will have a mainstream target audience and will be a large target audience because there are so many different types of genres. Music NL will be the name of the magazine because it will be about all music in North London.

This mood board is a based on R&B music. This is just one of the many that genres that would be included inside the magazine Music NL.

This is a spider diagram that i created. It shows all of the ideas based around a music magazine in North London. There are many pros of creating a magazine that includes all genres. However there are also many cons of creating a music magazine with all different genres.
There is also a mood board below that is based around R&B music. I did this because it is an example of one genre that may be inside the Music NL magazine, as well as many other genres.

My Final idea is a jazz music magazine. I came up with this idea because it is different but also is a very popular genre of music in North London. This would be targeted towards a certain group of people which means that the magazine will have to target them very specifically. The jazz magazine will be mainly targeted towards middle aged people that may want to get out and try something different to their normal routine.

This is another Spider diagram that i created. It narrows down some of the positives about creating a Jazz magazine.

I created a survey and asked a random selection of people all different ages what they think the best idea would be and what they think would suit the client brief.

Personal Research -
I asked this question to a boy aged 17 -
'What magazine idea to you like the look of most out of the three that i have created?'
I like the idea of the jazz magazine because it is more focused on one genre and the fact that because i like the genre of jazz anyway it is easier me to read and enjoy at the same time.

I asked the same question to a 23 year old female and her answer was -
I love reading magazines that have a wide range of choice and that contain different genres which is why i would prefer read music NL.

These are only two answers out of the many that i asked but by asking questions to a group of random people all different ages i discovered that the least popular idea was the Gig guide. The most popular idea was the jazz magazine i think because it is more precise and specific and based on one genre which a lot of people may find it easier to focus on one genre rather than a whole bunch on genres.

After asking a few questions to the random group of people I decided not to choose the Gig guide because it is difficult to choose what to put inside the magazine as it can vary because there are hundreds of different gigs to choose from to write about and include in the magazine.  With there being so many different types of gigs and concerts within the different types of genres i decided it would be too much of a wide range choice to narrow it down and choose which ones to pick and put into the magazine which will make the whole target audience happy. Also the target audience would be such a large and wide range of people it would be easier to target and suit the needs of a smaller target audience which is a niche audience. A niche audience is a lot more specific and easier to target to because they have certain needs that can be fulfilled by creating a certain type of magazine e.g. A jazz magazine. With creating a Gig guide there were many more cons to pros which is why I decided against making it. Also with creating a gig guide, some of the readers may not be happy with the selection of gigs and concerts that would have been chosen inside the magazine.

The idea of Music NL has the same concept of the target audience being too wide and difficult to suit their needs. The reason why it may be difficult is because there are so many different genres it may be difficult to choose what ones to include in the magazine that makes all of the audience happy and for everyone to be able to enjoy the magazine. People that enjoy a certain type of music may not want to read a magazine that talks about other genres of music that they are not interested in. However it was a difficult choice not to choose a magazine like music NL because a lot of people did like the idea of being able to read about a wide range of different types of music.

The mood board that i have created is just too show and give a taste of what jazz music is like and the colours and instruments that are seen within Jazz. I chose those font styles and colours because it suits the genre perfectly. The swirly type writing gives a jazz vibe and the colours black and red also suit the genre. The fonts are bright and bold and easily seen. The whole theme of my magazine is going to connote love and passion which is also why I have chosen the genre of jazz music. Jazz music is also really popular in North London and there are many different jazz scenes such as in bars and pubs around north London and in Camden in venues such as the round house and Ko Ko.

Strengths and weaknesses of my ideas - (M1)

Conclusion -
To conclude i feel that the idea that i am going to choose as my final idea is going to be the Jazz magazine. I feel it is most appropriate because Jazz is extremely popular in North London and also will have a certain target audience that will have specific needs. It is going to include a feature article/interview of a new and popular band in North London and it is going to have all the correct conventions of a jazz magazine to create the best outcome and bring in as many readers as possible. I chose this as my final idea because it is a specific genre magazine that has a certain target audience. It is also something that i think would be best suited to the client brief for people in North London as there as many vibrant jazz scenes such as performances in bars and pubs and also concerts at places in Camden and all around North London. I created a mood board and came up with some font ideas for the masthead of my front cover. I chose these specific colours because the colour red links perfectly with jazz as it connotes love and passion. I also chose this magazine because there will be less competition as there is a niche audience which makes it easier to target to the people that are reading it.

Task 2 - Create a proposal and pitch for a media product

Learning outcome 2 (U21): Be able to create a proposal and pitch for an original media product based on a given brief (P2).

After reading the brief that was created I have come up with a great idea for a new music magazine that is based in North London. I have been doing research and have come up with an idea that could be different and interesting for the local people living there. I have written a proposal that explains and tells you about all the funds, appearances and any other details that are included in my magazine and that are important. The magazine that I have created is called ‘Jazz Times (North London)'.  Jazz music is a popular music genre in North London and there are always gigs and shows around North London of new jazz singers and musicians.

Objective-
Jazz times’ magazines main objective is to be the newest and latest guide to listening to new jazz music in North London. Reading this magazine will get people up and out of the house and into new music and going to different environments such as jazz concerts and gigs. We want to aim to get young and mainly middle aged adults up and out of their homes and finding themselves at new music events that they wouldn’t usually go to. Our main aim is to bring young adults out of their comfort zone and finding new love for different music. This will also help younger but mainly middle aged adults meet new people and make new friends with the same love and passion for music.

Concept –
This magazine is meant to be the latest guide that will update people living in North London on the new jazz music and local jazz artists in North London. All articles will be about new and unplugged artists and their music. The magazine will be published once a week in most stores in North London on a Wednesday every week. The magazine will be £2.50 per copy to buy in the stores. This is a decent price as it isn’t too expensive so people will be able to afford it and it isn’t too cheap either. 'Jazz Times' focuses mainly on new jazz artists that are being discovered in North London and are performing in the local places such as the round house in Camden and local bars and pubs. Every week the magazine will include a double page spread of an interview with one of the latest local jazz artists in North London.

Why call it ‘Jazz Times’ (North London edition)?

I have named my magazine ‘Jazz Times’ because it is a catchy and a memorable name. It also makes sense as the magazine is only about jazz music. Whilst researching jazz music in North London I found that there are so many artists that perform locally and so many that want to perform and be discovered that the name of our magazine just seemed to fit perfectly.

Software

To create my magazine front cover and my double page spread i will need lots of different software programming such as photoshop, laptops, cameras, tripods and so on. Photoshop is the main programme that we used to ensure that our front cover and double page spread looked as realistic and detailed as possible.

Equipment

We also used a lot of different equipment such as  cameras, tripods, portable lights for cameras, and any props that were used during our photoshoots. Firstly we have to get permission from the media department to allow us to use their cameras, tripods and lights to take the best photos as possible. I also had to get permission from the music department at JCoSS, to allow us to borrow some microphones, a trumpet, and microphone stand and even the stage that we used for our photoshoot. Once we got this permission it allowed us to crete a photoshoot and take the most believable and realistic photos as possible for our magazine.

Job roles and responsibilities
There are so many different job roles and responsibilities within the process of creating media products. There are photographers, editors, journalist, publisher, models, art editor and so on. All of the job roles have a huge impact towards creating a magazine. Each different job role has a different responsibility.  For example, the journalists main responsibilities is to write the double page spread interview or article and to make it to the best that it could be.

Assets -
One of our main assets was the space that we did our photoshoot in. Our photoshoot took place in the multi purpose hall in JCoSS. We were lucky enough to have a free space that we had permission to use and luckily did not have to hire out a space or pay any money for a space to take pictures in.

Appearance
My magazines colour scheme is red, black, and white. I have chosen these colours because my main target audience is young and middle aged adults. These colours are suitable for both men and women and all types of ages. Also, the colour red is a bright and eye catching colour. On the front cover of the magazine I am going to have a new jazz artist or band that are becoming bigger in North London.
The colours do aim towards a unisex theme because of the neutral colours black and white. The colour red can connotate many things such as love, danger, anger, passion and so on. These things and emotions can be felt whilst listening and singing jazz music.

This image is the title and masthead of my magazine. I created this because it matches perfectly with my colour scheme as has the title of magazine underneath in a jazzy font. I chose this type of logo because I want my magazine to be able to be identified as soon as the logo is seen. It is simple yet so exciting and is an easy logo to identify. The musical instruments and the microphone symbolizes the idea of a jazz magazine as a whole. The magazines idea is about finding new jazz artists and getting middle aged adults out of their comfort zones and into new events and meeting new people.

'Jazz Times’ will have 3 main sections to the magazine. These 3 sections are:
Section 1: Newest jazz artists and bands
Section 2: Local events
Section 3: New discovered jazz artists and their stories on how they got there.

Each section of the magazine, the pages will be a different colour so that the people reading the magazines can identify what section they are reading and will make it easier to find the start of each section. Section 1 the pages will be white, Section 2 the pages will be red and section 3 the pages will be black. I am only using these 3 colours as it is simple and they are my 3 colours of my colour scheme. Our magazine will be printed on a glossy paper that looks presentable, smart and new. The look of the magazine is genuinely going to be quite modern and smart as it is going to be sold in most new agents and shops in North London and will be on show, being seen by people all the time.

Funding of the magazine –
The magazine is going to be funded by the any advertisement that the company, which relate to the magazine. For example, certain recording studios will advertise for us and any other events that promote jazz music. Other advertisement we have inside our magazine is for concerts and events that are happening in North London. Also, local restaurants/jazz and music lounges and bar and even any clothing shops such as Fenwicks and stores middle age adults would be seen in. These sponsors and advertisement will help us pay for the magazine and any extras that are needed to make the magazine as popular as possible. Our target audience is likely to enjoy reading about the companies that they are likely to go and shop.

Distribution methods -
Music stores such as 'The Arts Cafe' which is based in Enfield will sell copies of our magazines and we will promote their stores inside our magazine. We do this because people that walk into the music store are likely to be interested in music and therefore will want to read about new music that is going on in where they live.  As our target  audience is a middle age range we will have copies placed around in work environments such as offices, shops, staff rooms and waiting rooms. We will leave copies in these areas so that middle ages people catch a glimpse of our magazine and therefor it will become more popular within our target age group. Also a good way to distribute our magazine is too hand our free copies at large venues/events e.g. concerts. This is a good way to advertise our magazine because as well as our target audience there will be a wide range of people which is more likely to spread around that there is a new magazine. Also the fact they would be free copies will make it more likely for people to stop and take one rather than have to stop and take money out which they may not actually want to spend. However this could be bad for our magazine at first as it won't be taking any profit in, but in the long run it may have given us many more readers and made our magazine ten times more popular and more money. We also have our weekly subscriptions. This is when people subscribe to us weekly and a copy of our magazine will get sent to their homes every week or emailed a copy of our magazine.

Audience –

Primary target audience – Our primary target audience is middle age people aged 30-40.
This is specifically our target audience because they are in the middle of their lives and a lot of the time people of this age need to meet new people out of their comfort zones and go to new places rather than sitting at home.
This age group can also be too picky on what music they are listening to and just want to make new experiences and have as much fun as possible, which is what our aim is.
Within this age group, there is such a wide range of personalities and interests that meeting new people could be easy!
We hope that with this age group that if they enjoy reading us they would suggest to their friends and family.

Secondary target audience – Our secondary target audience is younger adults aged 20-30.
This is because our magazine is mainly directed at more middle aged adults. This age group is harder as they are middle aged and a lot of people in this age group enjoy listening to a wide range of music genres. This age group is harder to please as they are a lot pickier and may not be interested in as many things in a music magazine.

Our idea and goal is generally for anyone who enjoys jazz music to be able to pick up the magazine and be able to enjoy reading it whether they are male or female. We want to get people of this age out of their comfort zones and to start attending new events and concerts.

Research –

Situation –
'Jazz times’ felt as if there aren’t many music magazines, which cover just a certain genre. There are also not many magazines in North London that is based on new jazz artists in the area, and there are not enough magazines on certain genres such as jazz. Any article in the magazine will be about new artists that have been discovered, or about a jazz artist that has become more popular in North London. 'Jazz Times' will also give advice and tips on what jazz music is good and what the best events are around town. Many people are interested in music but just don’t know what to listen to. Our magazine is the perfect guide on what to listen to! We are very different to any other music magazine because we are not doing the magazine to write about famous jazz artists, we are doing it to help people discover if they enjoy listening to jazz music and to tell people who the latest jazz artists and bands in North London are. We also have advertisement in our magazine usually on skin products and good restaurants in north London. We put ads like this in because it is what middle aged people may like to read about and, attend and buy from. we can also give good advice on tips for middle aged people on what to buy and even what to wear to keep up with the latest fashions and trends.

Strengths –
One of our strengths is that we give advice on what jazz events we think that people should attend. We also give good advice on who we think they should listen to as we aim to write about the newly discovered artists. Few magazines give advice and tips on who to listen to and where to go, they just state information about famous artists themselves. We also have a blog online, which enables are readers to blog and tell us what they have enjoyed reading about and what they have not enjoyed. It gives our readers a chance to talk to each other online and ask us any questions that they want to ask. Our magazine is sold at £2.50 per copy, which is a strength because it is a reasonable price for most people to buy. In the advertisement inside our magazine we often include free skin/perfume samples just as a little extra for those reading our magazine.

Weaknesses –
As a new magazine, we do not have much popularity yet and we aren’t very well known. Hopefully as time goes on we will eventually gain more readers and lovers of the magazine. A lot of people especially our target audience do prefer to read magazines online, however we do not have an online addition set up yet, but are planning to create one as our magazine become more popular. Our magazines hope and aims will hopefully work and come true so that we become a successful magazine.

Opportunities –
We are hoping that when our magazine becomes more popular we will have many people subscribing to us, which will enable them to get a weekly copy of our magazine sent to their homes. There are opportunities such as meeting new people, going to new events. Our magazine will offer these opportunities because these things is what our magazine wants to encourage people to do.

Competition –
There are a lot of other music magazines that generally cover all genres of music whereas we just cover one genre. This is a big competition because magazines such as Q and vibe are very well known and popular. These magazines talk about global stars and events whereas we write about new faces and new events in north London. This shouldn’t be too much of an issue for our magazine because we target for a wide age group who live in north London and love music.

Q magazine is the UKs biggest music magazine. They feature all the biggest stars and write about the top 40 UK and all the biggest events around the world. They are a UK based magazine however focus on all kinds of famous people ‘Q’ magazine is the main competition because they are the biggest and most popular music magazine around and they focus on all genres and celebrity icons

Vibe is another popular music magazine however they are not much threat to pop weekly. Our target audience is a wide age group meaning 'vibe' may be competition for some of our readers but for others they may not even know what 'vibe' magazine is.

EN magazine is one of the local magazines that could be a potential competitor. This is because they already have a large group of readers and have got  wide range of articles that they write about. They also target towards middle aged people and that is who we are trying to target towards to reads 'Jazz Times'.

Time out magazine isn't a North London based magazine however it is based in London. This could be another potential competitor because again it based in London which means they may have a larger target audience that are reading there magazines weekly. However i don't think that we have the same group of people within our target audiences so therefore Jazz Times won't have to worry as they will have a different group of people as a target audience.

Article ideas -
Thinking about the articles that are going to be written inside "Jazz Times' i have decided that i want to have a featured interview with new jazz band that are also featured on the front cover of the magazine. The interview is going to be all about the band and there new lives being famous.

Another idea that came into mind was to just have the magazine journalists to write a whole article about the Band and there lives instead of having them being interviewed, have it professionally written all about the band.

Marketing plan –
  1. Marketing statement
  2. Marketing objective
  3. Marketing strategy

1. Marketing Statement –
'Jazz Times’ aim is to be committed to their target audience. This means that they want to be committed to the all middle-aged people that are going to be reading the magazine. 'Jazz Times’ want to help and give advice to people on what good jazz music is around to listen to in North London. Our main intention is to be easily accessible, easy and enjoyable to read and so that people find new places to go and new people to meet. We want our weekly magazine to become more popular and for our readership to keep growing and getting bigger. Our goal is for our target audience to find new music and for any artists that want to get somewhere, for them to come out of their comfort zones and get themselves into the public eye showing off their talent.

2. Marketing objective –
Our marketing objective is for thousands of middle aged people buying our magazine weekly. There are many other magazines and music magazines and guides out there, however there aren’t many on new jazz music alone in North London. We want to be able to discover and we want to meet our target audience’s needs and want them to meet new friends and go to new places.

Main objective: To have a page that is dedicated to new people living in North London that want to share their talents.
To accomplish this objective, we will need to gain more readers and have many weekly subscribers. We will also start creating merchandise such as t-shirts, wristbands, mug’s, and posters promoting our magazine and new artists that we have found. Also at any concerts and events that we advertise we will sell our t-shirts and wristbands there.

Marketing strategy –
Our marketing strategy is that we think of about our readers and think about what they would enjoy reading and would like to see inside our magazine. We also intend to create a face book campaign, which will promote our magazine and hopefully making it more popular. Facebook is the most popular social media app and thousands of people use it including our target audience, the wide variety of middle aged people. Stacks of our magazine will be placed in places like restaurants, spas, sport clubs and places that middle-aged males and females are likely to be spotted. They will also be sold in news agents, petrol stations and all typical places that magazines are sold.

Sample materials to support my proposal -

These are rough plans of what i want my magazine to look like. I tried to make them as similar as possible to my magazine and double page spread.

The bottom two are templates of my magazine and double page spread to base where i am going to place everything.

Task 3: Planning and Preparing a Pitch

Learning outcome 2: Be able to create a proposal and pitch for an original media product based on a given brief (U21) (P3, M2).

This is the link that leads to the my practice presentation:
 https://youtu.be/qLoYzVKw5Dk

After presenting my practice presentation to my teacher and peers i was given some feedback and i took the feedback and thought of some of the potential questions that may be asked when presenting to the client. I also have written the answers to the questions below.

Do you feel like there is going to be enough content for a weekly edition?
We are going to find out about new artists and gigs to speak about weekly. With further research we thought deeper into and realised that having a weekly magazine may not be the best idea so we have decided that we are going to change it into a monthly magazine that will be slightly bigger, rather than having smaller magazines weekly.

How did you come up with jazz ?
Did surveys whilst researching and whilst looking at music based in North London it was one of the most popular genres along with grime. I felt as if jazz just worked with my target audience and there were many jazz artists and events going on.

Where is this magazine going to be available ?
Shops in North London and are going to be sold at jazz concerts and gigs to gain advertisement swell as selling as many copies as we can achieve to sell .

How are you going to get people to know about jazz times?
Magazine is going to be placed in concerts and our first edition is going to be free to bring more people into reading it.  We also have an online blog, Facebook and twitter page for more advertisement

Where is the online version going to be available?
To start off we don't have an online magazine however we have a blog that is going to be available on our website along with links on our Facebook and twitter pages.

Task 4: Pitch your ideas

Learning outcome  3 (U21): Be able to pitch ideas on a proposed media product and respond to questions. (P4, M3)

This is the link for my final and updated presentation -

During my presentation i was pitching my idea for a new music magazine in North London. I received a large amount of feedback on my presentation which are potential questions that the client could have asked. I have now understood the feedback that i was given and understand the changes that need to be made to meet the given target brief.

Questions that were asked in my feedback -

How often are you going to publish the magazine?
Answer:  was originally going to publish weekly however we did more research into it an decided that we should publish it monthly rather than weekly. We realised that there wouldn't be enough content to put inside the magazine. We are going to focus on new artists swell as gigs, events and about the jazz genre.

Colour choices: red white and black for your house style colour, what was the reasoning behind this?
I chose my main colour to be red because it works well with the genre of jazz as we researched jazz and there was a lot of red tones. Black and white were really neutral and made it a really modern tone.

Did you look at newsstands in other shops to see what competition you had for the front cover?
I was told that i should be careful with the colour red being my main colour because there are so many other magazines with red front covers such as OK and Heat magazine. I responded with this saying that it shouldn't make much difference because my magazine is targeted towards a niche audience and is not a gossip magazine. He said that people may get mixed up with it being another type of magazine.

Why did you choose three different font styles? -
I had three different types of font styles on my front cover. I chose this because i wanted the main font and the font down the side to be bold and eye catching however the font down the side is slightly different to my main font. This is because the bolder text down the side looked squashed together and didn't suit the positioning or was it was trying to say. The font that says 'The 3 Notes' is in a swirly font. This is because the 3 notes are a new jazz band and the swirls work with the fact that they are a new and upcoming jazz bands and the font style works well with the picture behind the font.

£2.50 and glossy paper? will this work?
The idea of having a glossy magazine won't work very well purely because a glossy paper will be expensive to buy for many copies of magazines each month. We wanted the magazine to be £2.50 which is a reasonable price, however having glossy paper will increase the price of the magazine. Further research will have to be taken up on the pricing of different styler papers to match the correct style and correct price for our magazine and for the price of our magazine.

Audience? How do you think you can get people interested in your magazine?
We have a very niche audience, so the majority of our target audience are going to be jazz fans and are going to be the people that attend jazz events and gigs. However we are going to have as much advertisement as possible to try and bring other people into reading our magazine.

Task 5: Evaluate the response

Learning Outcome 3 (U21):  Be able to pitch ideas on a proposed media product and respond to questions (D1)

After watching my video of my presentation the client gave me a load of feedback that i am going to discuss. The client that observed my presentation asked me why I chose red to be my main colour. He made a valid statement that a lot of the most popular magazines such as OK and Heat magazine are both redtop which could mean there is going to be a lot of competition. However my response was to choosing red as my main colour was purely because it was a bright and eye catching colour and it also works extremely well with my music choice. I stated that if people really enjoyed reading our magazine then competition shouldn't be an issue. It may also be a good thing being mistaken as a popular magazine such as OK because someone not in our target audience may still find it interesting and may decide to buy it. It also shouldn't be an issue because we are a different genre magazine and we have our own target audience which is a lot more niche than gossip magazines like OK. I also thought that the colour of my magazine shouldn't determine who actually is going to read it.
The connotations of red could be action, energy, love for music and is a very vibrant colour.
Obviously colour is the key for a person to pick up a magazine in the first place which is why i think red was a good decision. I decided to stick with my original decision as keeping it red because i think its the best colour that will work and fit perfectly for my magazine.

The client asked me how was I going to get people interested in my magazine. My immediate response to this was that because we have a extremely niche target audience the majority of the audience are going to be jazz music fans and are also going to be the people  that attend jazz events and gigs. As well as just relying on the people that attend jazz events we are going to have a lot of advertisement online and around North London to try and bring as many new people as possible to read our magazine. Social media is one of the most important aspects as so many people today have Facebook and twitter apps on there phones.  There are many jazz groups and London group events pages are on social media which we could join on Facebook and twitter in order to promote our magazine which will also generate interest in it. We are also going to set up an instagram account to post all the different shots of different artists who are going to be interviewed inside our magazine. The instagram will also include exclusive pictures of inside the gigs and events. We are also going to have a twitter account in which we can tweet exclusive details about the artists and events that are written about inside our magazine.

I also decided immediately that I was going to change my magazine from a weekly edition to a monthly edition so that I have got enough content to put inside my magazine. Jazz is a very niche audience and there may not be enough content and artists to write about for a weekly magazine. So having our magazine monthly means that it can be that bit bigger with a tad more content than we would have originally with not enough content to put inside.

The client questioned me on my colour choices. I told him that i chose my colour scheme because it worked very well with jazz and also gave it a modern twist. The colour red connotes love, anger and passion and whilst researching jazz magazines there was a lot of reds, oranges and yellow tones, so I decided to go with red. The black and white are neutral colours which gave it the general modern tone.

He was also curious as to why I had three different font styles on the front cover of my magazine. I chose the first font because i wanted the main font and the font down the side to be bold and eye catching however the font down the side is slightly different to my main font. I agreed with what he was saying that there shouldn't be as many fonts on the front cover so when making later editions we are going to limit our front cover to having two fonts making it look more matched up and will make the front cover look nicer and smarter.

The client wanted to know why my magazine was £2.50 but at the same time wanted to know why I was planning on having glossy paper. I completely agreed with his point and realised that having glossy paper would make the magazine a lot more expensive than what I wanted it to be. The whole reason i wanted the magazine to be  £2.50 is because it is a reasonable price that my target audience will be able to afford. Having glossy paper would increase the price of the magazine which is why
I decided that when making copies of magazines in the future I am going to take further research into different styles and prices of different papers for magazines.

In conclusion, the ideas that i am going to take forward is definitely in investing in new paper and not going with the glossy paper idea because I agree that it is too expensive and will not work with the price of our magazine. I highly disagree with his opinion on the colour of my magazine as the colour red works perfectly with my idea and the concept of jazz. The red is bright and eye-catching and will work extremely well in stores and at gigs and concerts. I also agree to an extent that I am going to narrow down the amount of font styles that I am going to put on my magazine front cover. This is because it looks neater and smarter with limited amounts of font styles on my front cover. Overall the majority of the feedback I was given, i have taken on board and am going to use the clients feedback to make my magazine better.
