After reading the brief that was created I have come up with a great idea for a new music magazine that is based in North London. I have been doing research and have come up with an idea that could be different and interesting for the local people living there. I have written a proposal that explains and tells you about all the funds, appearances and any other details that are included in my magazine and that are important. The magazine that I have created is called ‘Jazz Times (North London)'. Jazz music is a popular music genre in North London and there are always gigs and shows around North London of new jazz singers and musicians.
Objective-
‘Jazz times’ magazines main objective is to be the newest and latest guide to listening to new jazz music in North London. Reading this magazine will get people up and out of the house and into new music and going to different environments such as jazz concerts and gigs. We want to aim to get young and mainly middle aged adults up and out of their homes and finding themselves at new music events that they wouldn’t usually go to. Our main aim is to bring young adults out of their comfort zone and finding new love for different music. This will also help younger but mainly middle aged adults meet new people and make new friends with the same love and passion for music.
Concept –
This magazine is meant to be the latest guide that will update people living in North London on the new jazz music and local jazz artists in North London. All articles will be about new and unplugged artists and their music. The magazine will be published once a week in most stores in North London on a Wednesday every week. The magazine will be £2.50 per copy to buy in the stores. This is a decent price as it isn’t too expensive so people will be able to afford it and it isn’t too cheap either. 'Jazz Times' focuses mainly on new jazz artists that are being discovered in North London and are performing in the local places such as the round house in Camden and local bars and pubs. Every week the magazine will include a double page spread of an interview with one of the latest local jazz artists in North London.
Why call it ‘Jazz Times’ (North London edition)?
I have named my magazine ‘Jazz Times’ because it is a catchy and a memorable name. It also makes sense as the magazine is only about jazz music. Whilst researching jazz music in North London I found that there are so many artists that perform locally and so many that want to perform and be discovered that the name of our magazine just seemed to fit perfectly.
Software
To create my magazine front cover and my double page spread i will need lots of different software programming such as photoshop, laptops, cameras, tripods and so on. Photoshop is the main programme that we used to ensure that our front cover and double page spread looked as realistic and detailed as possible.
Equipment
We also used a lot of different equipment such as cameras, tripods, portable lights for cameras, and any props that were used during our photoshoots. Firstly we have to get permission from the media department to allow us to use their cameras, tripods and lights to take the best photos as possible. I also had to get permission from the music department at JCoSS, to allow us to borrow some microphones, a trumpet, and microphone stand and even the stage that we used for our photoshoot. Once we got this permission it allowed us to crete a photoshoot and take the most believable and realistic photos as possible for our magazine.
Job roles and responsibilities
There are so many different job roles and responsibilities within the process of creating media products. There are photographers, editors, journalist, publisher, models, art editor and so on. All of the job roles have a huge impact towards creating a magazine. Each different job role has a different responsibility. For example, the journalists main responsibilities is to write the double page spread interview or article and to make it to the best that it could be.
Assets -
One of our main assets was the space that we did our photoshoot in. Our photoshoot took place in the multi purpose hall in JCoSS. We were lucky enough to have a free space that we had permission to use and luckily did not have to hire out a space or pay any money for a space to take pictures in.
My magazines colour scheme is red, black, and white. I have chosen these colours because my main target audience is young and middle aged adults. These colours are suitable for both men and women and all types of ages. Also, the colour red is a bright and eye catching colour. On the front cover of the magazine I am going to have a new jazz artist or band that are becoming bigger in North London.
The colours do aim towards a unisex theme because of the neutral colours black and white. The colour red can connotate many things such as love, danger, anger, passion and so on. These things and emotions can be felt whilst listening and singing jazz music.
This image is the title and masthead of my magazine. I created this because it matches perfectly with my colour scheme as has the title of magazine underneath in a jazzy font. I chose this type of logo because I want my magazine to be able to be identified as soon as the logo is seen. It is simple yet so exciting and is an easy logo to identify. The musical instruments and the microphone symbolizes the idea of a jazz magazine as a whole. The magazines idea is about finding new jazz artists and getting middle aged adults out of their comfort zones and into new events and meeting new people.
'Jazz Times’ will have 3 main sections to the magazine. These 3 sections are:
Section 1: Newest jazz artists and bands
Section 2: Local events
Section 3: New discovered jazz artists and their stories on how they got there.
Each section of the magazine, the pages will be a different colour so that the people reading the magazines can identify what section they are reading and will make it easier to find the start of each section. Section 1 the pages will be white, Section 2 the pages will be red and section 3 the pages will be black. I am only using these 3 colours as it is simple and they are my 3 colours of my colour scheme. Our magazine will be printed on a glossy paper that looks presentable, smart and new. The look of the magazine is genuinely going to be quite modern and smart as it is going to be sold in most new agents and shops in North London and will be on show, being seen by people all the time.
Funding of the magazine –
The magazine is going to be funded by the any advertisement that the company, which relate to the magazine. For example, certain recording studios will advertise for us and any other events that promote jazz music. Other advertisement we have inside our magazine is for concerts and events that are happening in North London. Also, local restaurants/jazz and music lounges and bar and even any clothing shops such as Fenwick’s and stores middle age adults would be seen in. These sponsors and advertisement will help us pay for the magazine and any extras that are needed to make the magazine as popular as possible. Our target audience is likely to enjoy reading about the companies that they are likely to go and shop.

Distribution methods -
Music stores such as 'The Arts Cafe' which is based in Enfield will sell copies of our magazines and we will promote their stores inside our magazine. We do this because people that walk into the music store are likely to be interested in music and therefore will want to read about new music that is going on in where they live. As our target audience is a middle age range we will have copies placed around in work environments such as offices, shops, staff rooms and waiting rooms. We will leave copies in these areas so that middle ages people catch a glimpse of our magazine and therefor it will become more popular within our target age group. Also a good way to distribute our magazine is too hand our free copies at large venues/events e.g. concerts. This is a good way to advertise our magazine because as well as our target audience there will be a wide range of people which is more likely to spread around that there is a new magazine. Also the fact they would be free copies will make it more likely for people to stop and take one rather than have to stop and take money out which they may not actually want to spend. However this could be bad for our magazine at first as it won't be taking any profit in, but in the long run it may have given us many more readers and made our magazine ten times more popular and more money. We also have our weekly subscriptions. This is when people subscribe to us weekly and a copy of our magazine will get sent to their homes every week or emailed a copy of our magazine.
Primary target audience – Our primary target audience is middle age people aged 30-40.
This is specifically our target audience because they are in the middle of their lives and a lot of the time people of this age need to meet new people out of their comfort zones and go to new places rather than sitting at home.
This age group can also be too picky on what music they are listening to and just want to make new experiences and have as much fun as possible, which is what our aim is.
Within this age group, there is such a wide range of personalities and interests that meeting new people could be easy!
We hope that with this age group that if they enjoy reading us they would suggest to their friends and family.
Secondary target audience – Our secondary target audience is younger adults aged 20-30.
This is because our magazine is mainly directed at more middle aged adults. This age group is harder as they are middle aged and a lot of people in this age group enjoy listening to a wide range of music genres. This age group is harder to please as they are a lot pickier and may not be interested in as many things in a music magazine.
Our idea and goal is generally for anyone who enjoys jazz music to be able to pick up the magazine and be able to enjoy reading it whether they are male or female. We want to get people of this age out of their comfort zones and to start attending new events and concerts.
Research –
Situation –
'Jazz times’ felt as if there aren’t many music magazines, which cover just a certain genre. There are also not many magazines in North London that is based on new jazz artists in the area, and there are not enough magazines on certain genres such as jazz. Any article in the magazine will be about new artists that have been discovered, or about a jazz artist that has become more popular in North London. 'Jazz Times' will also give advice and tips on what jazz music is good and what the best events are around town. Many people are interested in music but just don’t know what to listen to. Our magazine is the perfect guide on what to listen to! We are very different to any other music magazine because we are not doing the magazine to write about famous jazz artists, we are doing it to help people discover if they enjoy listening to jazz music and to tell people who the latest jazz artists and bands in North London are. We also have advertisement in our magazine usually on skin products and good restaurants in north London. We put ads like this in because it is what middle aged people may like to read about and, attend and buy from. we can also give good advice on tips for middle aged people on what to buy and even what to wear to keep up with the latest fashions and trends.
Strengths –
One of our strengths is that we give advice on what jazz events we think that people should attend. We also give good advice on who we think they should listen to as we aim to write about the newly discovered artists. Few magazines give advice and tips on who to listen to and where to go, they just state information about famous artists themselves. We also have a blog online, which enables are readers to blog and tell us what they have enjoyed reading about and what they have not enjoyed. It gives our readers a chance to talk to each other online and ask us any questions that they want to ask. Our magazine is sold at £2.50 per copy, which is a strength because it is a reasonable price for most people to buy. In the advertisement inside our magazine we often include free skin/perfume samples just as a little extra for those reading our magazine.
Weaknesses –
As a new magazine, we do not have much popularity yet and we aren’t very well known. Hopefully as time goes on we will eventually gain more readers and lovers of the magazine. A lot of people especially our target audience do prefer to read magazines online, however we do not have an online addition set up yet, but are planning to create one as our magazine become more popular. Our magazines hope and aims will hopefully work and come true so that we become a successful magazine.
Opportunities –
We are hoping that when our magazine becomes more popular we will have many people subscribing to us, which will enable them to get a weekly copy of our magazine sent to their homes. There are opportunities such as meeting new people, going to new events. Our magazine will offer these opportunities because these things is what our magazine wants to encourage people to do.
Competition –
There are a lot of other music magazines that generally cover all genres of music whereas we just cover one genre. This is a big competition because magazines such as Q and vibe are very well known and popular. These magazines talk about global stars and events whereas we write about new faces and new events in north London. This shouldn’t be too much of an issue for our magazine because we target for a wide age group who live in north London and love music.
Q magazine is the UKs biggest music magazine. They feature all the biggest stars and write about the top 40 UK and all the biggest events around the world. They are a UK based magazine however focus on all kinds of famous people ‘Q’ magazine is the main competition because they are the biggest and most popular music magazine around and they focus on all genres and celebrity icons

Vibe is another popular music magazine however they are not much threat to pop weekly. Our target audience is a wide age group meaning 'vibe' may be competition for some of our readers but for others they may not even know what 'vibe' magazine is.

EN magazine is one of the local magazines that could be a potential competitor. This is because they already have a large group of readers and have got wide range of articles that they write about. They also target towards middle aged people and that is who we are trying to target towards to reads 'Jazz Times'.
Time out magazine isn't a North London based magazine however it is based in London. This could be another potential competitor because again it based in London which means they may have a larger target audience that are reading there magazines weekly. However i don't think that we have the same group of people within our target audiences so therefore Jazz Times won't have to worry as they will have a different group of people as a target audience.Article ideas -
Thinking about the articles that are going to be written inside "Jazz Times' i have decided that i want to have a featured interview with new jazz band that are also featured on the front cover of the magazine. The interview is going to be all about the band and there new lives being famous.
Another idea that came into mind was to just have the magazine journalists to write a whole article about the Band and there lives instead of having them being interviewed, have it professionally written all about the band.
Marketing plan –
- Marketing statement
- Marketing objective
- Marketing strategy
1. Marketing Statement –
'Jazz Times’ aim is to be committed to their target audience. This means that they want to be committed to the all middle-aged people that are going to be reading the magazine. 'Jazz Times’ want to help and give advice to people on what good jazz music is around to listen to in North London. Our main intention is to be easily accessible, easy and enjoyable to read and so that people find new places to go and new people to meet. We want our weekly magazine to become more popular and for our readership to keep growing and getting bigger. Our goal is for our target audience to find new music and for any artists that want to get somewhere, for them to come out of their comfort zones and get themselves into the public eye showing off their talent.
2. Marketing objective –
Our marketing objective is for thousands of middle aged people buying our magazine weekly. There are many other magazines and music magazines and guides out there, however there aren’t many on new jazz music alone in North London. We want to be able to discover and we want to meet our target audience’s needs and want them to meet new friends and go to new places.
Main objective: To have a page that is dedicated to new people living in North London that want to share their talents.
To accomplish this objective, we will need to gain more readers and have many weekly subscribers. We will also start creating merchandise such as t-shirts, wristbands, mug’s, and posters promoting our magazine and new artists that we have found. Also at any concerts and events that we advertise we will sell our t-shirts and wristbands there.
Marketing strategy –
Our marketing strategy is that we think of about our readers and think about what they would enjoy reading and would like to see inside our magazine. We also intend to create a face book campaign, which will promote our magazine and hopefully making it more popular. Facebook is the most popular social media app and thousands of people use it including our target audience, the wide variety of middle aged people. Stacks of our magazine will be placed in places like restaurants, spas, sport clubs and places that middle-aged males and females are likely to be spotted. They will also be sold in news agents, petrol stations and all typical places that magazines are sold.
